Wonderful book on vintage streamlined irons! The culmination of 25 years of research and several years of organizing and writing, this recently published book Streamlined Irons, by Jay Raymond is one we can recommend. It contains breathtaking photographs taken by James B. Abbott and Jay Texter of gorgeous streamlined irons manufactured during the 1930s and 1940s mostly in America. The pictures are enriched by the author's talent for descriptive writing, a winning combination. Part of the book is devoted to a history of the clothes iron with photographs and facts about 30 of the earliest electric appliance manufacturers and their irons, some of which are one-of-a-kind. It's the first time that the early days are revealed with facts and dates and photographs. Bravo. But, the most of the book is devoted to 154 examples of streamlined electric clothes irons, where the mundane household appliance meets design forces applied to produce an aesthetic object. This book has much to offer a broad audience from graphic designers and product and industrial design enthusiasts, historians, certainly collectors, and speaking personally, students of product photography -- the pictures in this book make mine look like they were taken with an Instamatic. Irons aside, the aesthetic of the book is most appealing. www.streamlinedirons.com |
